COMMUNITY SUPPORT

We financially support Chumkriel Language School (CLS), a Cambodian-operated organisation that provides education to our local Kampot community. CLS offers a variety of programs, including English classes, computer workshops, agricultural initiatives, and creative arts activities. They also provide a public library, supplementary lessons to assist students with Cambodian State School courses, and parent inclusion programs to encourage community-wide participation. We believe in their holistic approach to education and are proud to support their efforts in delivering inclusive, quality education to the Kampot community.

AN ALTERNATIVE WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Cambodia is a leading global producer of clothing, with the garment industry employing over 700,000 workers and contributing approximately 80% of the nation's total export revenue (Better Factories Cambodia). However, many workers in this sector face challenging conditions, including long working hours, low wages, and unsafe transportation to and from factories.

To address these issues, we have established a safe, fair, and supportive garment production space. This environment provides an alternative for workers, allowing them to develop their skills and grow in a setting that respects and supports them as individuals. Our commitment to ethical practices not only improves the working conditions for our employees but also promotes a more sustainable and responsible industry.

SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

We offer skills development and training to all our staff, providing opportunities for growth both within Dorsu and beyond. In Kampot, a common challenge to skills development is the need to leave families and forego income to pursue training. Our approach includes onsite training and professional development, allowing workers to build their skills while maintaining their income and supporting their families. This not only enhances their career prospects but also contributes to raising employment standards and living conditions in the community. As a result, there is a greater emphasis on education for future generations, fostering a more skilled and educated community overall.

COUNTRY-WIDE INDUSTRY CHANGE

By establishing a local production space in Cambodia, we are significantly contributing to the growing awareness of the adverse effects the garment industry can have on workers, their families, and their communities. Our efforts provide an alternative that empowers workers to demand better conditions and advocate for their rights, fostering a movement toward large-scale industry reform.

With two retail stores and an expanding footprint in the Cambodian market, we demonstrate to both local and international consumers the benefits of supporting locally-made products. Our commitment to worker safety and livelihoods illustrates the positive impact of ethical production practices, promoting a sustainable and fair approach to the garment industry. This not only benefits the local economy but also sets a standard for responsible consumerism and business practices.

ROAD SAFETY

One of the most significant safety issues associated with garment factories in Cambodia is the transportation of workers in crowded, open-air trucks on dangerous roads, often with no enforced traffic laws. To address this concern, we provide bicycles and helmets to staff members who do not have their own means of transport. For those who own motorbikes but lack a helmet, we supply helmets to ensure their safety. Additionally, we offer safety insurance that covers accidents during travel to and from work, prioritising the well-being and protection of our employees. This initiative reflects our commitment to enhancing the safety and security of our workforce.
