Our Sustainability Choices

When it comes to sustainability, we believe that context is everything. Developing countries like Cambodia are expected to experience a disproportionate impact from climate change, and we believe that meaningful change begins with small, everyday actions.

Our relationship with the environment shapes our decisions as both a manufacturing company and a clothing label. While we acknowledge that we are not perfect, we are continuously striving to enhance our positive impact on the world. We invite you to visit us and learn more about our commitment to sustainability and our ongoing efforts to improve.

PRODUCTION STUDIO & STORES

We prioritize using locally available remnant materials, also known as "deadstock," to prevent these fabrics from becoming waste and releasing toxic chemicals into the environment. Currently, we utilize approximately 5,000 kg of deadstock fabric annually, with a goal of reaching 10,000 kg per year by 2025.

Our collections are primarily made of 90-95% cotton fabrics, as natural fibers decompose more effectively than synthetics. We avoid the use of harsh chemicals on-site, and all cleaning products, including washing powder, are chemical-free. Additionally, our production studio primarily uses tank water, benefiting from the frequent rainfall in Kampot, where it rains at least once a week.

LABELLING, PACKAGING & DELIVERY

All online orders are packaged in mesh laundry bags, reducing the use of plastic and helping to extend the lifespan of each garment. Wholesale orders are packed in large, reusable fabric bags. We use Certified Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 Polyester for our neck and care labels, ensuring they are free from harmful substances.

Our swing tags are made from 100% recycled cards, printed with vegetable ink, and attached with non-bleached string and safety pins. For shipping, online orders are placed in home-compostable mailers from The Better Packaging Co., and the majority of deliveries are handled by Sendle, a 100% carbon-neutral courier service.

    RESPECT FOR ANIMALS

Dorsu does not and has never used leather or any other animal-based materials in our supply chain. We also do not support the use of plastic and synthetic-based alternatives to leather. Instead, we prefer to use upcycled materials whenever possible, which may sometimes include upcycled synthetic materials, but we always avoid using even upcycled animal-based products.

We do not discriminate against Indigenous people who use animals in a respectful manner. However, as a brand that primarily sells to the Global North, we cannot condone the practices within global supply chains that are largely built through colonization, for animal products. When discussing our stance on leather, we make it clear that the issues lie with large agro-businesses and corporations, not with small Indigenous farmers or hunters.

    SUPPLIER CODE OF CONDUCT

We prioritise supporting local industries by building long-term partnerships with trusted independent suppliers who share our values. This close relationship allows us to regularly visit our partners, ensuring they meet our high standards and adhere to our Supplier Code of Conduct.

Our Supplier Code of Conduct sets out the minimum ethical and environmental standards required from our partners, such as providing safe and hygienic working conditions and maintaining reasonable working hours. It also establishes the high standards we uphold as a company.

As provisional members of the World Fair Trade Organization, we are committed to responsible business practices and to identifying, preventing, and remediating the human impact involved in running our business. Our Supplier Code of Conduct incorporates all aspects of the ETI Base Code and is informed by the Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact and The UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

    NEXT STEPS

We aim to reach 10,000 kg of upcycled materials per year. Additionally, we are exploring ways to reduce our waste to less than 10%. We are seeking to partner with an organisation to measure the environmental and social impact of our efforts.

Currently, we are contracted with DHL's Go Green Plus for all overseas shipments. This initiative prioritises carbon "in-setting," a method where the organisation financially commits to sustainable practices, such as using sustainable aviation fuel, to reduce or avoid greenhouse gas emissions directly related to its activities.
